Alain Voge Vielles Vignes Cornas 2005
Wine Spectator: Rated as Outstanding: a wine of superior character and style. "Really juicy, with red cherry, currant and raspberry fruit layered with racy mineral and enticing floral notes. Long and tangy on the finish, with great drive. Best from 2010 through 2023. 100 cases imported." May 2008
Winery: "The terroir of Cornas is dense granitic schist rather than mica-based as in Côte Rôtie, giving the wines a more subtle elegance in the mouth and a bit more high-toned purple fruit in flavor. A lighter style, with good violet and dark red fruit." Wired For Wine: Winter's bite is coming to nibble at us, and that just makes us crave red wine and hearty meals. This Alain Voge Vieilles Vignes Cornas will be just the thing with some za'atar-dusted eggplant frites with a garlicky, cumin aioli. Beautiful red fruit, minerals, enticing floral notes and subtle elegance make this Cornas (Syrah) a lovely choice with lean beef, lamb, game, sausage, mushrooms and more. We're feeling a little traditional, so our first choice with this Vieilles Vignes is roast leg of lamb with onions and potatoes. A French favorite is Canard aux Framboises, oven-roasted duck breasts with a buttery raspberry sauce. The long, tangy finish of this Alain Voge is echoed by the raspberry vinegar in the sauce. Grilled filet mignon with a chanterelle mushroom reduction drizzled on top will satisfy nicely too. Make sure you've got another bottle in the wings to sip with an aged Gouda cheese.
