August Briggs Napa Valley Old Vines Zinfandel 2007
Winery: "Another fantastic old vine Zin. This one is big & burly and you will be rewarded with some cellaring...if you can keep from opening it up! This Zin is very fragrant with black berry, black cherry, plum, cedar, and mocha oak tones. On the palate, it is flashy and expressive with flavors of wild berries, currant, and mocha. This wine has a long, chocolaty finish.
Each vineyard block was harvested and fermented separately. The clusters were all hand sorted before being destemmed into small open-top fermenters, and punched-down twice daily by hand. Following fermentation and pressing, they were inoculated for malo-lactic fermentation and barreled down. The barrels used were 30% new American oak from the Demptos cooperage, and 70% two to three year old French oak barrels. The wine was aged in barrel for 16 months. Only 750 cases produced." Wired For Wine: This big and burly Zinfandel is fantastic with easy comfort foods. Pair it with a hearty pizza with mushrooms and onions or your favorite lasagna. Burgers grilled just the way you like them are the perfect foil to those delicious red fruits in this August Briggs. Sweet barbecue sauces are oh-so-yummy with this flashy and expressive red. And, it goes great with a little heat. Make a puree of dried chiles, pecans, fresh orange juice, and garlic, rub it on your favorite steak, and grill away! Serve that steak with oven-roasted potatoes and you won't be disappointed. The formidable fruit notes in this Napa Valley Old Vines allow it to match up with less sugary, gooey chocolate desserts. Pour another glass after the dishes have been cleared, and bring out a big platter of dark chocolate-dipped macaroons for everyone to share. If you're not in the mood for sweet, this Zin is a home run with one of our all-time favorite cheeses: Stilton. If you're sold on the macaroons, put the Stilton on the burger and call it a day... Enjoy!
