Bonny Doon Vin Gris de Cigare 2010 (Rose)

Bonny Doon Vin Gris de Cigare 2010 (Rose)

  • Robert Parker, Jr. 90
Robert Parker, Jr.-The Wine Advocate:  Rated as An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. "The 2010 Vin Gris de Cigare, the finest dry rosé he has yet produced, is a blend of 71% Grenache, 16% Roussanne, 11% Grenache Blanc and 2% Mourvedre. Aged in both stainless steel and barrel, it is a dead-ringer for a Bandol rose (even though it has only 2% Mourvedre). Abundant aromas of lavender, flowers, cranberries and cherries are followed by crisp, fresh, lively flavors. Move quickly to purchase this super value as there are only 3,300 cases." Aug 2011

Winery:  "Fresh and bright with a pale pink/salmon color reminiscent of a Côtes de Provence Rosé or perhaps even a Vin Gris from Burgundy. Hints of wild strawberry, white cherry, apple blossom, and the barest whiff of spearmint. Palate is quite dry and zesty with pale red fruits, blood orange, citrus, and a lean yet supple finish. But what is most compelling about the wine is its elegance. We deployed far less skin contact than in years past, and in this instance, less is truly more. Delicious today but will develop added richness and aroma with an additional 6-12 months of bottle age."

Wired For Wine:   In the words of Julia Child, "Rosés can be served with anything.". Take that notion and combine it with this Bonny Doon Vin Gris de Cigare (Rosé) and you have an instant winner winelovers. Fabuleux! We love nothing better than to belly up to a beautifully chilled bottle of this Vin Gris and enjoy a platter of assorted charcuterie, some French Picholine olives, and crusty bread with a couple of disks of Cabecou de Poitou cheese. Some days, that is all we need.  If you're not hungry yet, it is a delicious apéritif all by itself. If you're in the mood for more, the lovely fresh fruit, floral and lavender notes and fine dryness of this California Rosé pairs gorgeously with grilled shrimp, roast pork, fish, salads and most importantly, roast turkey! We'll be enjoying this elegant Vin Gris in a couple of weeks with roast turkey and pomegranate gravy.  This Bonny Doon is terrific with a light meal of tarragon grilled shrimp over a composed salad. Throw on some grilled asparagus and a lemony vinaigrette and you can't go wrong. Grilled pork tenderloin with an apple-ginger chutney will bring out its fruit like a pro.  If you didn't start with the delicious Cabecou de Poitou, it is a wonderful close to what will surely have been a memorable meal. Venez mes amis! Buvons un peu de vin gris!
