Callabriga Douro 2008

Callabriga Douro 2008

  • Wine Spectator 90
Wine Spectator:  Rated as Outstanding: a wine of superior character and style. "There's a pure mineral note to the rapierlike red plum and dark cherry flavors. Very fresh and balanced, with the tannins building on the currant- and spice-filled finish. Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional. Best from 2013 through 2017. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 4,200 cases made." Apr 2010

Winery:   "Callabriga Douro 2008 is intensely red with shades of purple. It has complex aromas dominated by notes of red fruits, such as plum and blackberry, a discreet touch of oak and hints of spice. It is a balanced, full-bodied wine, with good tannins and a rich and prolonged finish with a black fruits complexity."

Wired For Wine:  Olá vermelha grande is what they might say in Portugal when you trot out your first bottle of Callabriga Douro.  Make sure there are plenty of chairs around in case of swooning, and only then bring in the platter of tiny, grilled rib lamb chops with a minted vinegar dipping sauce.  Heavenly.  At this price, winelovers, you can serve it straight in the glass, and make a delicious sangria with it for those who are in the mood to play up the rich red fruit and spice in this Portuguese vermelho (red).  We find that red meat, lamb, game and braised vegetables pair beautifully with this Callabriga.  If there is still a chill in the air where you are, we suggest garlic-braised beef short ribs to bring out the complex aromas and full body of this Douro.  Our number one comfort food choice is a beef/bacon meatloaf with spicy ketchup on the side.  Another favorite we recommend is lamb-stuffed tomatoes with rosemary.  Bring out at least one more bottle and enjoy it with a potent Italian Piave cheese.  It is intense and full-bodied, a la Parmigiana Reggiano.  These are all a few of our favorite things...
