Charles Cimicky Trumps Shiraz 2008

Charles Cimicky Trumps Shiraz 2008

  • Robert Parker, Jr. 91
Robert Parker, Jr.-The Wine Advocate:  Rated as An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. "The 2008 Trumps Shiraz was aged in predominantly new American oak for 17 months. A glass-coating purple color, it displays a smoky, toasty, spicy nose leading to a fruit-filled, succulent Shiraz with a bit of underlying structure. This lengthy effort will evolve for 1-2 years but can be enjoyed now and over the next 6-8 years.  Drink 2009-2017." Dec 2009

Winery:  "It was once customary for a small group of zealous Barossa pioneers to regularly seek the cellar retreat of an old vineyard cottage. Within the cool stone depths of this hidden refuge, these normally hard working men would while away many hours playing cards and drinking wine away from the critical eyes of puritanical souls. Now a lingering part of Barossa history, the crumbling remains of this cottage still stand amidst venerable old vines that constantly produce this excellent Shiraz that always ‘comes up trumps!’
Charles Cimicky, son of the founder, and his wife, Jennie, now run Cimicky Wines. He believes in maintaining the inherent fruit characters of the rich, robust Barossa style and in the importance of viticulture.  He also concentrates on organic methods as much as possible; his motto is "Good wine begins from the earth." Apart from minor drip irrigation in January and February, the vines are dry grown, cover-cropped and organically fertilized.
Cimicky aims his 15,000-case production mostly at reds, concentrating on Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot."

Wired For Wine:  The good news: unlike the Barossa pioneers of old, you won't have to find a spot away from the disapproving gaze of  puritanical souls to enjoy this rich, robust Charles Cimicky Trumps Shiraz!  The plum notes in it will be perfect with a platter of Peking duck spring rolls and a hoisin dipping sauce.  Make sure those glasses are full!  You will be eager for the entree after you experience those first glasses, so without delay, our opinion is that the smoke and spice, juicy fruit and focused nature of this Barossa red will require meaty fare, barbecue, mushrooms and hearty pasta dishes.  The toasty side of this Cimicky is lovely with sticky balsamic ribs, a twist on a classic.  If enjoyed the spring rolls and want to make it a duck theme, tagliatelle with duck ragu served family style from a big bowl is a terrific choice.  A Middle Eastern option which will bring out the spices and the gorgeous fruit of the Trumps is grilled lamb kebabs with cumin and cinnamon over pine nut/raisin rice.  Talk about your delicious...  A fitting end to the meal will be a newly opened bottle and an aged, smoked Gouda cheese.  We'll see your Trumps and raise you a glass!
