Chateau de Montfaucon Baron Louis Cotes du Rhone 2006

  • Wine Spectator 90
Wine Spectator:  Rated as Outstanding: a wine of superior character and style.  "Very solid, with a juicy core of blackberry and plum woven with cocoa and pastis hints. The smoky, spicy finish has nice length. Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Carignan, Mourvèdre and Counoise. " Jun 2009

Winery:  "Baron Louis is an exceptional blend of six Rhone varieties in quest for a perfect balance, finesse and elegance. The cuvee expresses the richness of the Southern Rhone wines.  The wine ideally accompanies all kind of meat: lamb, beef, game and duck in particular. Try also with meat dishes with sauce and seasoned dishes."

Wired For Wine:  Located a stone's throw across the Rhône river from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this Château de Montfaucon Cotes du Rhône Baron Louis delivers tremendous value for the money.  The beautiful balance and finesse of this Cotes du Rhône, with its ripe and dense fruit, hint of anise, and long, zesty finish make it the perfect partner for countless meats and flavors.  Open your first bottle and put out a platter of assorted charcuterie.  A lovely, dry salami, some olives, and slivers of fennel will access the pastis in the wine, and make for a delicious beginning.  If you're having a light summer meal, we suggest a classic salad Niçoise.  Make sure that seared tuna is top shelf...  A Croque Monsieur sandwich (French grilled ham and cheese with a to-die-for white sauce) is another great small meal option.  The fruit in the Château de Montfaucon is the perfect foil for the salt in the ham and the nutty bite of Gruyère cheese.  Comme c'est bon.  If you're in the mood for bigger choices, the Baron Louis will pair famously with a crisp-skinned rotisserie duck served with a fresh cherry compote.  Braised beef is another sure win with this well-structured, rich, full French red.  Grill up some vegetables to go with the smokey, spicy side of this Cotes du Rhône, and you've got yourselves a great meal.  If there's any more room, pour another glass, and enjoy it with a smooth, delectable French Port Salut cheese.  Formidable, mes amis!
