Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte Grand Cru Graves 2005

Robert Parker, Jr. - Wine Advocate:  Rated as An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. "One can’t say enough about the accomplishments the Cathiards have achieved at this property since 1990. Prior to their purchase of the property, appallingly diluted, vegetal, fruitless, charmless wines were produced, but they have turned Smith-Haut-Lafitte into a showcase Pessac-Leognan. The inky/blue/purple-tinged 2005's extraordinary nose reeks of charcoal, incense, scorched earth, abundant blackberry, blueberry, and cherry fruit, toast, and spice. Good acidity, huge but sweet tannin, and fabulous precision as well as definition characterize this full-bodied, super-concentrated effort. It should prove to be among the longest-lived wines yet made by the Cathiards. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030+." Apr 2008

Winery:   "Château Smith Haut Lafitte's great terroir of deep Gunzian gravel, with old vines sinking several metres into the soil, produced stupendous results: the wines have a concentration, texture, and class never before seen."

Wired For Wine:  Outstanding!  That about sums up the truly remarkable qualities of the Smith Haut Lafitte Graves.  The masterful precision, definition and concentration of this Grand Cru Classe, combined with its beautiful tannins make for a wine you won't soon forget.  It is so spectacular that you may just want to revel in your first glass without any food.  If you're in the mood for some amuses bouche, then we recommend Marcona almonds and some mild to moderately flavored olives.  They will work well with the toast and earth of this Graves.  The many facets of this Haut Lafitte allow it to pair with salmon and tuna, duck and goose, and lamb and beef dishes.  What's your pleasure? The labor involved in duck confit is worth it for this Chateau Smith.  Heavenly together.  A rich, crisp-skinned roast goose with a red wine, cherry reduction will bring out the abundant, dark fruit of this Bordeaux blend.  We could go on forever, but will stop with one of our favorites; roast leg of lamb with fennel and small, sweet tomatoes.  Merveilleux!  Pour another elegant, sensuous glass and luxuriate in it with a French Le Moulis cheese.  It's distinctive earthiness and dominantly buttery flavor will be perfect with the Smith Haut Lafitte.  We think Neal Martin said it best when he described this wine: "bloody gorgeous".
