Edmeades Mendocino Zinfandel 2007

Edmeades Mendocino Zinfandel 2007

  • Robert Parker, Jr.-Wine Advocate 90
  • Restaurant Wine 5 Stars
Robert Parker, Jr. - Wine Advocate:  Rated as An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. "The 2007 Zinfandel Mendocino is a super-generic cuvee boasting a deep ruby hue as well as a stunning nose of sweet, briery black cherries, black currants, spice, and an underlying floral character. Abundant flavor, medium to full body, impressive purity, and fine elegance suggest this delicious Zinfandel should drink well for 2-3 years." Feb 2010

Restaurant Wine: Rated as Exceptional.  "The Mendocino bottling is fleshy and full bodied, with intense fruit character and a long finish. It tastes of plum, cherry, blackberry, toast, spicy oak, and raspberry. Great value." Jan 2009

Winery:   "The 2007 Mendocino is a little different from past vintages. Instead of being dominated by cherry aromas, this leans more towards a mixed bowl of berries. The other interesting point is an aroma like a rustic mountain cabin with fresh red meat and spices being prepared for dinner and then freshly baked wild berry pies for dessert - of course the wood stove damper is not working well so there is a little smoke in the room...  The tannins are soft and supple. We always add a little Syrah and Petite Sirah for the mid palate, filling in the hole of the donut, but this year it is a little more pronounced in the flavors and aromas, hence the gamey and meatiness underneath all the mixed fruits.  With aging the wine should evolve into a very layered and complex Zinfandel, with toast and spice from the oak picking up in intensity and the creaminess becoming more apparent after a few years."

Wired For Wine:  The Edmeades Mendocino Zinfandel is the perfect combination of ripe, dark fruit, silky tannins, a whisper of toast and smoke, all elegantly bundled into an abundantly flavored luscious red.  The full body of this Zinfandel is great with many meats, especially off the grill, hearty pastas, and lots of different vegetables.  Pour your first glass and enjoy it with a plate of grilled burger sliders with caramelized onions on top.  Heaven.  If you're spending time outdoors already, slow cook a rack or two of sweet barbecued baby back ribs à la Texas. The spice in this Edmeades Zin will go beautifully with it.  A little easier, but equally delicious are grilled lamb chops and mixed, grilled vegetables.  Don't forget the eggplant.  If pasta is one the menu, we love this Zinfandel with garganelli with artichokes, pancetta, mushrooms and peas.  And finally,  if takeout is on the menu, the lush fruit of this Mendocino Zinfandel is terrific with moderately spicy Mexican and Asian fare which are not in the fish realm.  After all that, if you've still got game, pour another glass or two and sip it with a medium-sharp cheddar of your liking; it will be great with the lovely fruit in the wine.  Who's hungry?
