Excelsior Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2009
Wine Enthusiast: Rated as Very good, may offer outstanding value if the price is right. (It is!!)"... this should be an easy find that’s well worth the money. Black currant leaf, dark plum flesh & baked fruitcake fill out the nose & mouth, while a touch of milk chocolate enriches the finish. Balanced & drinkable now with medium weight & approachable tannins." Nov 2011 (Advance)
Neal Martin for Robert Parker, Jr.-the Wine Advocate: "This Robertson based winery owned by Freddie and Peter de Wet offers two sub-ten dollar wines that are worth every cent." Aug 2011 Winery: "Appearance: Blackish plum in colour. Aroma: Ripe blackcurrants a plumy fruit. Soft ripe tannins balance toasty oak aromas and sweet fruit flavours. Palate: Good structure with soft, clean finish. Ageing potential: 5 years." Wired For Wine: Start pondering the possibilities, winelovers, because this Excelsior Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is a killer value! (of the 'run, don't walk' variety...) be sure to have at least one or two in the wings because it's going to go fast. Fill your glasses and enjoy them with warm bites of shredded brussel sprout and browned onion naan. This delighfully versatile Cab will pair nicely with lamb, beef, game, rich pastas and lots more. We don't know about you, but we've got some snow bearing down on us, so that automatically makes us crave the comfort foods of winter. Our choice is a beef shepherd's pie with a beautifully browned mashed potato top. See? We told you this wine would go fast. Baked rigatoni with sausage and eggplant and a pine nut crunch topping will fit the bill nicely too. And for those soft, ripe tannins, grill up some lamb kebabs dusted with cumin and cinnamon. They'll be divine with Arabic rice dotted with raisins, onions, cinnamon and a handful of vermicelli noodles. Open another bottle and make sure your hands aren't in the way while everybody devours the American Sea Hive cheese. It's hand-rubbed with local honey and Redmond Realsalt, and it is magnificent. What do we think? We think you need to call this Cab... Size: 750ml; screw cap Varietal: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Alcohol: 14.72% Ageing: "light French oak maturation" Region: South Africa |
