Groth Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2009
Winery: "'Mellow' is a great word for the white grape harvest in 2009. Long, steady periods of moderate temperatures ripened the Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc grapes in such a way that high sugars were not an issue. The lack of excessive heat and heat spikes allowed us to make wines at more moderate alcohols while still retaining a tremendous amount of fruitiness and acidity. A great year for whites!
Our 2009 Sauvignon Blanc was produced from grapes grown in various microclimates of the Napa Valley. The warmer Napa Valley microclimates give us grapes that result in wines with a lush, full melon/citrus character in the aroma and in the flavor. The cooler Napa Valley fruit provides a solid, crisp backbone that gives the wine an exciting liveliness that balances the rich creaminess from "sur lie" aging." Wired For Wine: Crisp elegance, tremendous fruitiness and acidity, and a deliciously rich liveliness at a great price. What could be better? Well, not much if you've got a bottle of this Groth Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc in front of you... Pour your first cool glasses and toast these last few days of summer with some rock shrimp-cannellini bean crostinis. Raw oysters offered with cocktail sauce or a shallot mignonette will fit the bill nicely too. As for something a little more substantial, this Sauvignon Blanc marries well with many different choices from chicken, fish and seafood, to fresh herbs, salads and most any vegetable. The rich creaminess of this Groth white will mirror a lemony hollandaise drizzle over crab cakes beautifully. The lemon will bring out this Napa Sauvignon Blanc's citrus side. Grill some chicken breasts and dress them with a cauliflower-leek puree. The lovely acidity will shine opposite the butter in the vegetable puree. Saute a fresh batch of asparagus in olive oil and throw in some pine nuts and sea salt. It will go perfectly with either of the entrees. To finish off your meal on yet another terrific culinary note, open one more bottle and serve it with a platter of Wabash Cannonballs. These small spheres of American goat cheese offer a hint of citrus and a touch of spiciness which will envelop this exciting Groth in a big, bear hug. Who's hungry??
