Massena The Surly Muse 2010
Robert Parker, Jr. - The Wine Advocate: Rated as An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. "Made from 100% Viognier, the 2010 The Surely Muse has intense notes of peaches, poached pears, honeysuckle and a whiff of fennel seed. The medium-bodied palate has a great concentration of citrusy / mandarin peel flavors with some silkiness to the texture and a long finish. Drink it now to 2013.
With his family growing grapes since 1844, Dan Standish represents the sixth generation in this line. He started the Standish label in 1999 and Massena in 2000 with partner Jaysen Collins. None of the team here is formally trained in winemaking, with Standish learning through experience at some top wineries including Torbreck. " Dec 2010 Winery: "Bright straw colour with pale straw hue. The nose displays delicate notes of apricot and tropical fruits followed by a touch of citrus and spice. The palate flavours are a touch on the light side with flavours of apricot and pear followed by some honeysuckle on the back palate. Good acid structure with a clean dry finish. Aftertaste of apricot, honeysuckle and a hint of spice." Wired For Wine: The Massena Surly Muse Viognier, unlike her name, will bring you nothing but happiness. No heartache here, winelovers. This silky white will inspire you to slip on your sandals and shorts and sit outside with a platter of shrimp and lobster tempura rolls. Oh my heavenly evening on the deck... The intense notes of peach and pear, background citrus, gentle floral nuances and beautifully balanced acidity make this Surly Muse ideal with chicken, fish, seafood, curries and more. We love its perfect acidity with creamy, individual chicken pot pies. Our top choice for fish with this crisp Viognier is black cod (also known as butterfish) with miso. It is a dish you will not soon forget. An Indian-style chicken curry with ginger, and the touch of heat it brings will be lovely opposite the wonderful fruit of this Massena. Gather everyone around again for newly filled glasses and finish them off with a delicious French Banon de Chalais cheese. Just because this muse is surly doesn't mean that she still won't bring lots of inspiration... to empty your glasses!
