Penfolds Bin 389 2003 Magnum 1500ml
Robert Parker, Jr. - The Wine Advocate: Rated as "An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character."
"An impressive effort is the 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz Bin 389. A blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon and 48% Shiraz, primarily sourced from the Barossa, Padthaway, McLaren Vale, and Langhorne Creek appellations, it was aged 14 months in large oak vats. A beautiful deep ruby/purple color is followed by sweet aromas of bay leaves, black currant liqueur, smoked herbs, roasted meats, and hints of soy and licorice. This big, chewy, solid, rich Cabernet is ideal for drinking over the next 7-8 years. About 20% new American oak hogsheads was used in its evolution." The Wine Advocate - October, 2006. Wine Maker Notes: "Combining the structure of Cabernet with the richness of Shiraz, Bin 389 exemplifies Penfolds skill in balancing fruit and oak....Nose: Spices (nutmeg) and savoury/demi-glace notes synergise with smoky, barrel ferment aromatics to offer a complex and inviting Bin 389 nose. Palate: Complete, rich, mouthfilling, easily handling the prominent tannins and new oak. A sweet and concentrated mid-palate yields to reveal a lingering finish, adorned with anise, leather, spice and mocha. Peak drinking time is 2008 to 2015."
