Silvio Grasso Pi Vigne Barolo 2005
Wine Spectator: Rated as Outstanding: a wine of superior character and style. "Plum, prune and bark aromas turn to raisin. Full-bodied, chewy and powerful, with big tannins and lots of concentration. Best after 2012. 850 cases made." Sept 2009
Winery: "A typical garnet red color. The nose, too, is typical of Barolo, with ethereal notes of red fruit jam and aromatic herbs. The toasty aromas come from the French oak barriques where the wine spends 24 months maturing before bottling. Another 24 months spent in the cellar before release allows the wine to continue maturing: on the palate it is dry and supple, with a good finish. 14% ABV gives the wine full body, while low acidity and evident tannins contribute to its overall structure." Wired For Wine: Behold the Silvio Grasso Pi Vigne Barolo. Pi Vigne means "devout vines" in Italian. We think it's had some heavenly inspiration. We like our first glass by itself to start, so that we can settle into the great concentration and get to know its dark, rich fruits. If you're hungry, pull out a fall treat and serve up individual shooters of roast chestnut soup with white truffle oil drizzled on top. Be prepared, spontaneous Amen!s may erupt... The dark, jammy fruit, earth, toast and herb notes, lovely tannins and big, beautiful structure of this Piedmont red make it a perfect choice with beef, lamb, game and more. We love it with braised lamb shanks over creamy Parmesan polenta. The earthy side of this Silvio Grasso will shine with currant-and-prosciutto stuffed pork loin roast with sage gravy. Baked, hearty pasta and meat dishes are great with this Barolo, so we say make it wild mushroom and sausage lasagna. Refill your glasses and serve up a potent cheese - the stinkier, the better. Do those Italians know what they're doing when it comes to wine, or what??!
