St Francis Reserve Pagani Vineyard Sonoma Zinfandel 2004
Winery: "The warm 2004 vintage ripened these grapes to the peak of their potential – spicy, brambly Zinfandel, chocolatey Petite Sirah, floral Mourvedre, peppery Carignane and intensely colored blue-black Alicante Bouschet. This Zinfandel was aged for 14 months in American oak selected for its cinnamon, nutmeg and clove flavors that enhance the complexity of this big red wine. After bottling, it was aged for one year prior to release."
Wired For Wine: Crafted from vines planted in the Pagani Vineyard in 1880, this St. Francis Pagani Vineyard Reserve Zinfandel is massive, chewy, and intensely fragrant. Pour your first bottle and watch the delight as the sipping begins with wedges of 4 onion tart and wild mushroom crostini with truffle oil. They will bring out the distinct depth, spice and oak of this Reserve Zinfandel. Moving on to entree choices, you will want to keep in mind that this St. Francis Zin is no shrinking wallflower; it is complex and big, with opulently rich fruit flavors of plum and cherry, notes of pepper, spice, coffee and smoke, as well as a beautifully complementary hint of mineral. Barbecue and grilled meats and sausage, baked, hearty pastas, pizza and many other choices will work well with this seductive Sonoma red. We recommend grilled pork chops with port and a cherry relish. Hello fabulous fruit! Eggplant stacks with pork and olive ragu will display the smoke and oak nicely. And on the easy side, a portobello mushroom pizza with a tiny bit of Stilton blue cheese sprinkled over the top cannot help but wow. If you're not interested in the Stilton on the pizza, it will be the perfect closing act for the meal when you open that last bottle. If you're in the mood for something sweet, though, try this concentrated concerto of nearly endless flavor with some spiced chocolate cake and macerated berries. Holy delicious, winelovers!!
