Stewart Russian River Pinot Noir 2007 by Paul Hobbs
Winery: "The growing conditions of 2007 in the Russian River Valley were nearly ideal for producing very ripe, intensely flavored grapes. Rainfall throughout the year was scant and the summer temperatures were moderate. This Pinot Noir clearly shows the quality and character of the stellar vintage. The wine is dark purple, immediately forecasting its concentrated dark fruit core. Its aroma is loaded with berry and dark toffee notes, mingling with a subtle touch of very fine French oak. In the mouth the wine is rich and dense, powerful for a Pinot Noir, with a little young tannin that will melt away with years in the bottle. The ripeness of the vintage is evident in the layered notes of plum, cranberry, pomegranate and molasses. The dense, fleshy texture continues through a long, juicy finish." Just the Facts: Legendary Paul Hobbs is the winemaker of this stupendous Pinot Noir. He meticulously checks the grapes throughout the growing season to gauge ripeness and concentration and then harvests them on a row-by-row basis only when each row is ready. He then literally hand-sorts the grapes on sorting tables, removing any grape clusters that are not ripe. After aging the wine in French oak barrels, Paul bottles the wine without fining and filtering. Wired For Wine: No beating around the bush here; we LOVE this Stewart Russian River Pinot Noir. It's a staff favorite. Knock everybody's socks off right away when you serve the first glasses with bacon-wrapped chicken livers on rosemary skewers. For the main course, the red and dark fruit, toffee, supple tannins and hint of forest floor make this California Pinot a great match for salmon, Ahi tuna, duck, chicken, lean meats and lots more. We are contemplating roast turkey with porcini mushroom gravy very seriously. Grilled salmon with olive tapenade vinaigrette and arugala will be delicious opposite the velvety mouthfeel of this remarkable red. And for the earthy side of this Stewart, make is harrisa-spiced lamb chops. Put a few more logs on the fire, open another bottle, and sip it with your favorite goat cheese. You can thank us later...
