Taurasi Vigna Macchia dei Goti 2005
Robert Parker, Jr., The Wine Advocate: Rated this as an Outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. "Caggianos 2005 Taurasi Vigna Macchia dei Goti is an intense, linear wine imbued with persistent notes of smoke and earthiness that emerge from its structured frame. Deceptively medium in body, the wine gains considerable volume as layers of flavor continue to develop in the glass. This is a terrific effort from Caggiano. Antonio Caggiano makes some of the most delicious and accessible Aglianicos in Campania, making his wines a great choice for readers who want to explore one of Italys most fascinating grapes.
Wine has been made here (in Campania) for at least several thousand years, and the virtues of Campanian wines were extolled by the Roman poets. The most important region within Campania is Irpinia, which is home to three prestigious DOCGs; Fiano di Avellino, Greco di Tufo and Taurasi; and the Irpinia DOC. Taurasi in particular is the most ageworthy, complex and structured of the wines made from Aglianico." Apr 2009. Winery: "A strong ruby red colour. A fruitly smell, complex, bold, with a definite scent of black fruits of the forest. Fermentation of these Aglianico grapes occurs in stainless steel, temperature-controlled tanks with a long period of maceration on the skins, giving the wine its intense, ruby red hue. The nose is elegant and complex, with varietal notes of ripe plum, dried violet, red and black small fruits as well as aromas of liquorice and spices which are developed as the wine matures in medium capacity Slavonian oak casks for 18 months. The wine further matures during an 18 month period of cellaring in the bottle, allowing the numerous and sweet tannins to round out. Vigorous and elegant on the palate, the wine is soft, warm, and fresh, with a very long and pleasant finish." Wired For Wine: Strap in, winelovers, this find of an Aglianico is fantastico! It's vigorous yet elegant palate handles bold dishes with ease, and we recommend it with a butterflied, grilled leg of lamb. Serve it with a creamy pesto risotto and some oven-roasted onions and tomotoes and everyone goes home happy. For a less fancy occasion, the Caggiano is perfect with a spicy sausage pizza. We love this wine with giant meatballs served over spagetti and our favorite red sauce too. As my father says, "Oo fa!". Another beautiful companion for this nectar from Taurasi is savory and/or strong cheese. Lunch today may just have to start with some sharp Provolone and a glass of the Caggiano. Who cares what comes after that?! This is a unique opportunity to purchase a collector-grade Italian red for such a price. It is extremely difficult to find in the U.S. Size: 750 ml Varietal: 100% Aglianico di Taurasi Vinification: Stainless steel with long maceration period Development: Fined in Savonian oak casks for 18 months Vintage: 2005 Region: DOCG Taurasi, Campania, southern Italy Production: 1,600 dozen |
