The Winner's Tank Shiraz 2008
Robert Parker, Jr. - The Wine Advocate: Rated as An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. "A perennial Best Buy, Winner’s Tank’s 2008 Shiraz is a glass-coating opaque purple. It exhibits an excellent nose of violets, incense, blueberry, and blackberry. Layered on the palate with succulent flavors, this smooth-textured, lengthy effort will offer pleasure over the next 4-5 years." Dec 2009
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: Rated as Outstanding. "Opaque ruby. Ripe but youthfully clenched aromas of cherry compote, singed plum and dark chocolate, lifted by pepper and gingerbread notes. Rich, deep and seductively lush, with enticingly sweet dark berry fruit and a mouthfilling texture that's rare for a wine at this price point. Suave and expansive, finishing with gently sweet tannins and spicy building length." Sep/Oct 2009 Winery: "The grapes were harvested from David and Cathy Knight’s estate vineyards. Langhorne Creek Shiraz generally suits this style of wine well as Shiraz fruit from the region has no problem reaching this level of ripeness displaying ripe berry characters. Furthermore Langhorne Creek Shiraz characteristically has a soft tannin structure that contributes to mouthfeel and early drinkablity." Winner’s Tank is another recent discovery that highlights what can be accomplished when an extremely talented winemaker gets his hands on some premium, Langhorne Creek fruit. Winner’s Tank is a new venture between Reid Bosward of Kaesler vineyards, and David and Cathy Knight, owners of the Winner’s Tank site. Bosward is consulting on the project as David Knight completes enology courses and moves into the winemaking arena. The name relates to an old water tank that sits in the corner of the vineyard. In true Aussie spirit, a strong rivalry exists between the three neighboring towns in the local Australian Rules Football competition. Each year the winning team heads out to the vineyard to paint the tank in their team colors. Wired For Wine: The Winner's Tank Shiraz will make you feel like you're standing in the winner's circle, winelovers! Stephen Tanzer says that the gloriously rich, lush characteristics of this Aussi red are "rare for a wine at this price point" and we couldn't agree more. Stock up mates! We think an ideal companion for your first bottle is peppery beef kebabs and braised pearl onions skewered on short, fresh rosemary sticks. Moving on, the impressive dark fruits, pepper and spice, exotic notes and soft tannins of this deep, dark Shiraz come together beautifully in a wine which pairs well with many meats, sausage, mushrooms, and hearty pasta dishes. The "singed plum" of this Winner's Tank is irresistible with crisp-skinned Peking duck. The hoisin sauce will take to it like a long lost love... For the spice notes, we say whip up some Mediterranean lamb flatbreads with feta, garlic, cumin and mint. You won't be sorry you did. And if it's comfort you're looking for, our choice is fettuccine with veal, sausage and mushroom ragu. Send everyone home happy after you open another bottle or two and serve it with an especially delicious, smooth Italian Pecorino Sardo cheese. On your mark, get set...
