Two Angels Petite Sirah 2006
Wine Enthusiast: Rated as "Excellent, extremely well made and highly recommended."
"If youre a Petite Sirah fan youll love the richness and power of this one, from an appellation in Lake County. Its dry and softly tannic, and notable for an explosion of blackberries, cassis, plums, chocolate, anise, black pepper and sandalwood." Winery: The 2006 Two Angels Petite Sirah is dark as the night and boasts savory aromas of dark berry, violets, pomegranate, tamarind and roasted game. Abundant fruit flavors are nicely integrated with toasted oak and roasted coffee undertones. What is especially alluring, given the dark color and ample, rich tannins, is the round almost silky mouthfeel and the pleasing, lingering finish. The grapes for Two Angels come from the renowned Shannon Ridge Vineyards, extremely volcanic, red pumice stone terroir. Hugging the mountain rims along the east edge of the High Valley AVA at close to 2,200 feet (the highest vineyards in California), the area is reminiscent of the Rhone Valleys Crozes-Hermitage vineyards. All the grapes for this wine came from a vineyard with a slope of 40 degrees. The fruit was all hand-picked and hand-sorted before cold soaking and a long, cool fermentation. The wine ages for ten months in a combination of 30-percent new French barrels and 70-percent 1-to-3 year old French and American oak. Serve at room temperature with robust dishes, including beef, venison, turkey, game birds and semi-soft or hard cheeses. Wired For Wine: As the air turns crisp, the Two Angels have arrived just in time for your favorite hearty Fall meal. At the top of our list are game dishes. The robust fruit in this Petite Sirah will pair beautifully with medallions of venison with a rich sauce of your liking. Not to worry if game isn't typically on your menu; the Angels play quite nicely with red meats, especially grilled steak, and Mexican food! We think the velvety fruit/black pepper/roasted coffee is what make it a good companion for enchiladas or something with a mole sauce. Petite Sirahs are great with cheeses too. We'll be enjoying the fantastic nutty flavor of a hunk of P'tit Basque with a glass of the Two Angels while we decide whether to fire up the grill or order in. Arriba!
