Zaca Mesa Estate Viognier 2006

Zaca Mesa Estate Viognier 2006

  • Connoisseurs' Guide Rating: 92
  • Wine & Spirits Rating: 92
Connoisseurs' Guide:  Rated this as "An exceptional wine. Worth a special search of the market."

"This wine's aromas have it all-flowers, hints of white peaches and Fuji apples, a layer of hardwood richness and even a whiff of tropical fruit, and there is equal joy to come in the youthfully vital, slightly viscous yet always balanced flavors. Like many of its coastal brethren, it has the firm, still developing fruit to improve for a couple of years in the bottle, and this wine is accompanied by the added pleasure of an invitingly low price for what it offers.  Connoisseurs' Guide, January 2008

Wine & Spirits Rated this as "exceptional example of the type."

"Light at first, neither sweet nor oily, this Viognier brightens to fresh, lasting lemon and peach flavors as it develops with air. Decant it to serve with seared scallops."  Wine & Spirits Magazine, August 2007

Winemaker
:  "On the nose, aromas of honeysuckle and white peach hint at sweetness. However, this wine is dry on the palate with notes of ripe apricot, lemon-lime, melon and lychee. A lingering finish has a touch of minerality, a signature characteristic of our vineyard.

Wired For Wine:   The Viognier white grape was once once fairly common, but it is has become rare.  The wines are predominantly dry, and are well known  for their floral aromas, with frequent fruit nuances as well.

The estate-grown and bottled Zaca Mesa Viognier has a pleasing light yellow hue, and delivers characteristic dryness along with beautiful fruit notes combined with a soft kiss of citrus.  It finishes with a gentle grip and good persistence.

The citrus in this wine make it an ideal companion to butter and cream sauces on white fish, lobster, and chicken dishes, while the fruit is the perfect foil for curries.  Or, to kick off the evening, put it next to some roasted nuts and watch it disappear!
