93pts Jeb Dunnuck

From the Spanish countryside, with the help of highly esteemed French winemaker Jean Marc Lafage, we've got the Bodegas Castano Solanera Vinas Viejas. It's rich, dark and smooth, with gorgeous, ripe fruit and perfect balance. Fire up the the grill and whip up something with charred edges to go with the lovely fruit and spices of this delicious red. Pork carnitas will work, as will a peppery steak, or paninis with arugula, roasted lamb, Manchego cheese and pickled onions. Hungry yet winelovers??

James Dunnuck:  "The 2016 Solanera is up with the finest vintages I’ve tasted of this cuvée (and I’ve had most of them). A blend of 65% Monastrell, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 15% Grenache, all from more limestone and higher elevation soils (and the Monastrell vines are 70 years old), it reveals a saturated purple color as well as full-bodied notes of blue fruits, cedarwood, spiced cherries, and peppery herbs. It’s deep, rich, and textured, yet also balanced and beautifully pure. It’s a steal at the price." Apr 2019

Winery:  "At the foot of Monte Arabi, the Castaño family tends some of the oldest vines (30-100+ years old) planted in the sun drenched DO of Yecla. Under the supervision of Eric Solomon and Jean-Marc Lafage, Solanera is a blend of Monastrell (65%), Cabernet Sauvignon (20%), and Tintorera (15%) which is aged in oak for 10 months. Richly flavored with dark fruit and spices, Solanera captures the warmth and generosity of this rural part of Spain.

Dotting a rugged landscape of vineyards, olive groves and almond orchards in southeastern Spain are casitas - small, whitewashed and decoratively tiled shelters that serve as refuge from the heat and blinding light of the midday sun. Solanera is inspired by this beautifully remote part of Spain, its ancient vines and those who tend them."

Trade Notes: "I’ve long been a fan of this wine, but I can say with certainty that this is the most successful Solanera ever produced. And the fine folks at Bodegas Castano have been making it since 1999! But it was in 2015 that they enlisted the help of Frenchman Jean-Marc Lafage to help them improve the balance and polish of their red blends. Good call Family Castano!"
