Von Winning Riesling Extra Brut
We've looked to Eric Asimov for guidance and advice for many years now. He's been writing about wine for the NYT for over 34 years, and he really knows his stuff. In his July 23rd article, "12 Summer Sparkling Wines, Because Who Needs a Reason" he starts by saying that 2020 isn't giving us much to celebrate these days, but then reminds us that it is always a good time to drink sparkling wine. We couldn't agree more. Skip to the Von Winning Riesling Extra Brut. It has been a staff favorite this summer, providing welcome and delicious bubbles to distract us from the heat, and more importantly, to accompany things like cornmeal fried oysters, smoked salmon appetizers with capers, dill and creme fraiche, and a summer supper of chicken picatta. Make no mistake, this Von Winning doesn't need food; it is the perfect aperitif all by itself. It just depends on what you're craving. Whatever that may be, these bubbles will scratch that itch.
The Pour, Eric Asimov, New York Times: "I’ve never had much luck with German sparkling wines, often finding them overly tart and acidic. But Anne Krebiehl, author of The Wines of Germany, an excellent book published in 2019, believes the category has great potential, especially those sparklers made of riesling, like this one. Von Winning often ferments its wines in small oak barrels, unusual with riesling, and it wouldn’t surprise me if barrels were used for this sparkler. It’s toasty, creamy and substantial, yet dry, refreshing and balanced." Jul 2020
