97pts Robert Parker, Jr.' Wine Advocate

From vines lovingly planted well over 100 years ago, the Domaine Raymond Usseglio Cuvee Imperiale Chateauneuf-du-Pape is born. If you're in the market for a big, full-bodied iconic French red oozing luscious fruit which melds beautifully with floral notes, earthy spice notes and gorgeous, juicy tannins that bring you to a tremendous finish, then look no further. The Usseglio family has you covered with their flagship wine. The musculature of this CdP is one for hearty meals and dishes only; delicate fare will just be overpowered by the Cuvee Imperiale. Roast leg of lamb studded with garlic and rubbed with tapenade will do the trick nicely. A Provencal staple of cassoulet made with white beans, duck confit, garlic sausage and smoky, thick-cut bacon will make a believer out of anybody. And for a combo that's a little off the beaten path, try it with burnt ends barbecue for a heavenly melange of smoke and spice that you won't soon forget. Fill your glasses once more to accompany a pungent French Affifelice cheese. Talk about a big finish - you have no idea winelovers...

Robert Parker, Jr.'s Wine Advocate: "Despite the early hour of my appointment back in June 2019, this was one of my favorite visits of that trip, so it was a pleasure to taste through the lineup of bottled wines this summer. The 2018 Cuvée Imperiale is one of the top wines of the vintage. Buy some if you can find any.

Most of the vines for the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Imperiale were planted in 1902, mainly Grenache, with a few other scattered plants of other varieties. Full-bodied and concentrated, it boasts massive flavors of raspberries and cherries, with just enough herbal intricacies woven into the fabric of the wine to impart a sense of lightness and freshness—it positively tingles on the long, long finish. Produced from biodynamically grown fruit at yields just half the maximum permitted by the appellation (16–18 hectoliters per hectare, versus 35), it's a tremendous effort. Drink date: 2021-2035." Winery: "La Cuvée Imperiale is from our oldest vines, most of them 100 years old (planted in 1901-1902). Extremely low yields (16-18 h/h) guarantee a wine that is dense and profound. The ancient Grenache vines bring to this cuvee their finesse and elegance. Will age for dozens of years. Decant if you wish to try earlier. Because it is bottled without any filtration, some sediment – natural and beneficial to the aging process – is possible."
