92pts John Gilman's, View from the Cellar

John Gilman's View from the Cellar: "The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon from Ex Libris is a good, ripe and well-balanced bottle of young cabernet. The wine comes in at fourteen percent octane and offers up a nicely old school nose of red and black cherries, cigar wrapper, a touch of spice elements (mostly cardamom), good soil signature and a discreet framing of cedary oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, nascently complex and beautifully balanced, with fine depth at the core, lovely focus and grip and a long, poised and ripely tannic finish. This is fine cabernet for the cellar and it should prove to be an excellent drink with a decade’s worth of bottle age. Fine juice. 2028-2060."

Ex-Libris is a Latin term for "from the library" and was the guiding principal for this proprietary project. Through connections with some top wineries in Washington, the vintners were able to secure some superlative lots of wine from top vineyards. The goal of the project is to produce wines that drink like $30-$40 bottles, but sell for $20.

This Bordeaux blend contains all five of the main varietals, including 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 7% Malbec, 2% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. A significant portion of Cabernet Sauvignon came from the Sheridan Vineyard, which is one of the great new sites in Washington made famous by Andrew Will's single vineyard bottling. The balance of the Cab comes from the Champoux, Sundance and Katherine Leone Vineyards.

Winery: "A classic Cabernet Sauvignon: The nose has beautiful dark berry and cassis fruit. On the palate there is a cassis, sandalwood and cigar box notes with a beautiful backbone of acidity and tannin to balance. A wonderful wine that drinks like a $45 Cabernet."
