93pts Robert Parker, Jr.'s Wine Advocate
A maverick of sorts, Jean-Claude Lapalu is among the most respected and revered growers in Beaujolais, a darling of the Paris wine scene, and a leader in the so-called Natural Wine movement in France. He is the third generation to farm the vines on his property, which is 9 hectares of largely east and southeast facing vines scattered from Mont Brouilly down through the rolling hills to his home village of Saint-Etienne-la-Varenne, the "gateway to the Crus”. All of that devotion and passion have resulted in the Lapalu Vieilles Vignes Beaujolais Villages, which garnered raves from Robert Parker, Jr.'s Wine Advocate. Seared duck breast with cherries would pair beautifully with the wine's lovely fruit.

Robert Parker, Jr.'s Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Beaujolais-Villages Vieilles Vignes is superb, bursting from the glass with inviting aromas of cherries, plums and warm spices. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, satiny and sapid, with terrific depth and concentration, its lavish core of juicy fruit complemented by considerable savory nuance—proof, if any were needed, that Lapalu is one of the finest exponents of this underrated appellation. Drink 2018-2025." Sep 2018

Trade Notes: "A top-tier old vine Beaujolais-Villages from a densely planted, early ripening sector. This super value is supple, succulent and very pretty.

Lapalu's patchwork of cuvées are a result of a curious mind, years of experimentation, and perpetually evolving tastes. Today he is more interested in elegance than extraction, and his collection of wines are lively, supple, sinuous and utterly delicious."
