Chappellet Pritchard Hill Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2017
Another stunner from Napa Valley's highly acclaimed Chappellet vineyard. Their 2017 release of the Pritchard Hill Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Enjoy.
Robert Parker, Jr.'s Wine Advocate: "Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill comes bounding out of the glass with exuberant black cherries, warm cassis, chocolate pie and blackberry preserves notes plus nuances of wild sage, forest floor and tobacco. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is elegantly played and refreshing with velvety tannins and a long mineral-tinged finish. Drink 2020-2045." Oct 2019
Jeb Dunnuck: "The flagship is the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill, and this cuvée just about always represents the pinnacle of mountain Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley. The 2017 is 100% estate Cabernet Sauvignon and reveals a deep purple color as well a stunning bouquet of blue fruits, burning embers, dark chocolate, sage brush, and crushed rocks. It's powerful, full-bodied, and concentrated, and the tannins clamp down on the finish enough to warrant hiding this beauty in the cellar for a solid 5-7 years. If drinking today, give it an hour or two in a decanter. It's another stunning wine from this estate. Drink 2025-2050." Jan 2020
Antonio Galloni's Vinous: "The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill is a positively stellar wine in this challenging year. Crème de cassis, licorice, lavender, chocolate, spice and espresso all run through the 2017. This is an especially inky, flamboyant style for Chappellet, but all the elements come together very nicely. Drink 2022-2032." Jan 2020
Winery: "Powerful, profound and impeccably structured, this wine captures the essence of great mountain-grown Cabernet Sauvignon. As it evolves in the glass, concentrated aromas of blueberry, blackberry and black currant meld with hints of anise, graphite, complex herbs, dark chocolate, espresso and spice. Though lush and viscous on the palate, a supple elegance frames the rich black cherry and ripe berry flavors, with taut underlying acidity adding poise and purity to a long resonating finish.
The most sought-after wine in our portfolio, this limited-production Cabernet Sauvignon represents the pinnacle of Chappellet winemaking and embodies the elegant power and complexity of Pritchard Hill winegrowing. Like the great Bordeaux wines that first inspired Donn Chappellet, this wine is crafted by blending Cabernet Sauvignon with other classic Bordeaux varietals. The wine was aged for 22 months in 100 percent new French oak. Grown on our rocky, mountainside vineyard, our Cabernets have consistently displayed an ability to age for several decades."
2017 Growing Season & Harvest: "After five years of drought, the 2017 growing season started off with record-setting rainfalls that replenished the vines and pushed the growing season to a later- than-normal start. In the vineyards, we applied thoughtful canopy management techniques to achieve balanced crops with just the right amount of sunlight on the fruit. Moderately warm temperatures in late May led to a perfectly timed bloom and fruit set. With rising temperatures in the last week of August, the grapes were able to develop ideal ripeness, resulting in wines with lovely colors and aromatics accompanied by beautifully concentrated flavors."
