97pts James Halliday
Another lovely option for your top shelf, winelovers, is the Henley Farm The Beast Shiraz. It's got a truckload of dark red and blue fruit and oak. Over time, the earthy elements will develop, so you'll be richly rewarded if you can drum up some patience. Think big pieces of meat on the grill, or roasted in the oven with herbs and vegetables, which will lead to rich gravies and sauces which will delight in this Barossa red. In case we haven't made it clear already: this Beast is a beaut.

James Halliday: "The road to intensity is littered with blackberries. This is where wine meets bitumen (asphalt) meets fruit meets oak. It's colossal in its breadth, depth and reach. It's like some prehistoric creature; it will take an awful lot for its magnificence to ever be dimmed; it will live on for as long as you want it to. Drink by 2045." Oct 2016

Robert Parker, Jr.'s Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Shiraz The Beast spent 22 months in oak (60% new French), so it has a toasty, cedary veneer to it right now. There's plenty of cherry fruit, so just give it some time in the cellar before popping a cork. By then the oak will have morphed into lovely dried-spice elements adorning ripe cherries, and the full-bodied wine will show more elegance on the lingering finish. Drink 2020-2035.

In only about 15 years since Hentley Farm's first releases, the winery has become a must-visit in the Barossa, in large part thanks to the award-winning restaurant, which emphasizes local ingredients. It helps if the wines aren't too shabby, either, served in the original 1840s homestead. Winemaker Andrew Quin and owner Keith Hentschke are increasingly focused on the 150-acre property's individual vineyard blocks, which consistently go into the different bottlings, like The Beauty and The Beast. The Creation is a limited bottling that changes from year to year, depending on the winemaker's latest experiment. The 2014 was all press wine from J Block, while the 2015, sourced from a neighboring vineyard, was aged in 50% new American oak." Aug 2018

Winery: "Black olives, liquorice stick and blackberry play the leading role on the nose and are supported by toasty almonds and spicy vanillin. Traditional Beast tannins line the front of the palate before a more subtle mid palate loaded with black fruits and forest berries. At the back dark fruits continue and combine with dark chocolate and vanillin, a finish that seems to never end!

Like all great vineyard sites, this block’s expression of rich fruit and ripe, supple tannins result from the interaction between two key variables: soil and microclimate. Red clay loam topsoil overlying massive clay with bluestone at depth allow the creation of naturally low yields with intensive flavours. The block’s position is elevated and enjoys long, even sunlight exposure, further intensifying the aromatic and flavour profile."
