Oddero is one of the great, historic, traditional Barolo houses with a long history spanning over 200 years. There are mentions of the Oddero family in La Morra as far back as the 1700s, though the family was likely there even before that point. The Oddero estate is one of the first to bottle Barolo. Not only that; their Barolo vineyards are now certified organic. The Oddero Rocche di Castiglione is one of the estate's single-cru wines, a flagship wine that is a treasure for any serious Barolo lover. Set it on a shelf for a few more years, and when you can't wait any longer, decant it for at least an hour while you prepare a grilled pizza with black, oil-cured olives, plum tomato, thick mozzarella slices, all brushed with EVOO and sprinkled with flaky sea salt. The pairing is other-worldly. Try it with duck confit raviolis in an oxtail broth. Not craving meat? Not a problem; a risotto made with ceps mushrooms is perfect for this Piedmontese red, as are sauteed sweetbreads with grilled, shaved fennel and caramelized cippoline onions. We're not done yet! Fill your glasses once (or twice) more and enjoy them with an Italian Boschetto al tartufo cheese. You'll be glad you did.
Robert Parker, Jr.'s Wine Advocate: ""This is the family's historic vineyard cru, located in Castiglione Falletto at the border with Monforte d'Alba, and the Odderos have been making wine from this site since 1982. This is a thin little snake of vineyard land that shows unique and different characteristics in its wines. In the 2015 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione, those start with a strong mineral, almost salty element you taste right at the get-go. This wine is robust and tight in the mouth and should relax over the next two or three years. It's another wonderful effort from Oddero. Drink 2021-2040." Jun 2019
Antonio Galloni's Vinous: "The 2015 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is bright, perfumed and super-expressive, with that striking combination of aromatic intensity and structure that is such a signature of this site, especially here. Rose petal, chalk, mint and red berry fruit add to an impression of total finesse and grace. Bright, saline notes pulse through the wonderfully expressive finish in another Barolo that has so much to say. Drink 2025-2040." Feb 2019
Winery: "Rocche di Castiglione displays elegance, fine tannins, a persistent taste and minerality. It accurately reflects the characteritics of the soil of origin. Its tannins develop from a rugged soil, sandy and calcareous. Ruby red in colour with light garnet reflections, delicate notes of spices and liquorice and a desirable bouquet of red berries. Extraordinarily long finish.""
