Robert Parker, Jr.'s Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Réservée hits the standard assemblage: 80% Grenache, 6% Syrah, 4% Mourvèdre and 10% "others." Still in cask at the time of my visit, it has expressive floral and garrigue notes, plus hints of star anise layered over a base of black cherries. Full-bodied, deep and rich, this looks like a vintage to set aside for a while, with at least 15 years of longevity ahead of it. Drink 2021-2035.” Aug 2019
Jeb Dunnuck: "Not yet bottled, the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Réservée is a normal blend of 80% Grenache, 6% Syrah, 4% Mourvèdre, and the rest assorted varieties (not destemmed), brought up all in foudre and old barrels. It has classic Pégau notes of ground pepper, earth, meat, truffle, and blackcurrants as well as medium to full body, good density, building tannins, and a great finish. Laurence compared this vintage to 2005, but I think this 2017 has more density and flesh. It’s a beautiful, classic Pégau that reminds me of a slightly toned down 2009. Drink 2023-2047." Aug 2019
Winery: "The bunches of grapes are carefully hand-picked and there is a strict selection of grapes from the picking basket, tractor and tank. No de-stemming takes place and the blend of 13 grape varieties are gently crushed before fermentation takes place for ten days in a cement vat. No yeasts are added and there is no temperature control in this natural process. After pressing, the wine is aged for 2 years in selected large oak old barrels.
Colour: Dark red with a purple body. Nose: Black ripe fruits like morello cherries and raspberries, juniper berries, black pepper and garrigue. After several years aging, the aromas will be characterized by plums, dried stone fruits, leather, fur and sandalwood. Mouth: Round, rich and powerful with soft tannins. With time it will evolve into a complex and spicy wine."
Pegau Lore: "Owned by father and daughter team Paul and Laurence Feraud, Domaine du Pegau is one of the great estates in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The benchmark producer of traditionally styled Chateauneuf, Pegau is justifiably ranked among the greatest wines in the world. The Ferauds have been growing vines in Chateauneuf-du-Pape since 1670, with titles to their earliest vineyards dating back to 1733. Though the estate has scaled great heights and now includes nearly 52 acres under vine, it is a hallmark that the winegrowing remains deeply traditional and has changed very little in the last 150 years."
