Robert Parker, Jr.'s Wine Advocate: "The concentrated, cherry-berry-scented 2016 Beaumes de Venise Les Garennes doesn't show quite the complexity or suppleness of the 2015 I reviewed last year, but it remains a fine effort, graced with delicate herbal and floral shadings. Full-bodied and rich, it's supple on the mid-palate, then turns drying and tannic on the finish. Give it a couple of years to soften. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. Drink 2020-2028.
Philippe and Elisabeth Bernard farm 60 hectares of vineyards divided among the appellations of Beaumes de Venise, Vacqueyras and Côtes du Rhône. They represent the fifth generation on the estate, but they are the first to make their own wines, having withdrawn from the co-op in 2008. They also have a nursery business, providing vines to other vignerons in the area. "I love Beaumes de Venise," said Philippe, as we toured his vineyards. "It's really elegant, and you can drink it with anything. When it became a cru, some winemakers started to try to make bigger, richer wines, but that's not why Beaumes de Venise became a cru." The stars here are the top cuvées from Vacqueyras, like the Fumitarde and the •G, a Grenache-heavy cuvée, but Philippe is characteristically modest about the quality of the 2016s. "Yield was perfect, the weather was amazing, and in the end, the wine is very nice," he said. "The problem with '16 is that you don't want to spit it."" Nov 2018
Winery: "Purple-red color, first aromas on red and black fruits like strawberries, completed by little pepper and spices aromas at the end. Interesting freshness, well balanced, round with tiny tannins at the end. Situated at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail, the terroir of Beaumes de Venise gives complexity and freshness to this wine, along with aromas of dark fruit and good structure. Between the Cotes du Rhone and the Vacqueyras, this Beaumes de Venise has found a beautiful balance. This is the perfect accompaniment to red meat, duck, or rabbit dishes."
