"...Messaggero is absolutely delicious. Radiant, supple and expressive, with notable purity of fruit, the 2009 exudes class." ~ Antonio Galloni's Vinous

We had this Montemercurio Messaggero Vino Nobile di Montepulciano with duck confit with homemade cranberry sauce, roasted thin asparagus and haricots, and polenta made with parmesan. The rich smokiness of the duck paired beautifully with the full body of the wine, while the tart fruit of the cranberry sauce was eye-openingly delicious opposite the pristine fruit of the Messaggero. What a find, winelovers. Vino Nobile has the distinct honor of being the first DOCG wine to arrive on the market in Tuscany - that's right; not, Chianti, Brunello or Barbera. It was celebrated as the wine of the nobles, hence its name. Thomas Jefferson was a fan. It's sometimes overshadowed by its Super Tuscan cousins, but make no mistake, this wine is just as memorable and worthy of your attention. The Montemercurio not only offers delicious fruit in its full body, it also hints at some earthiness and spice, thereby giving it wonderful food friendliness.

As for food choices, we say start the festivities with your favorite antipasti, prosciutto and Tuscan salumi. Fettucine with a wild boar ragu and lots of freshly grated parmesan is perfect for an entree. Roasted wild mushrooms over creamy polenta is an alternative to meaty dishes. We've got this Nobile at the very best price on the web, so really think it should be bought by the case. Non è vero?

Antonio Galloni's Vinous:  "Montemercurio 2009 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Messaggero is absolutely delicious. Radiant, supple and expressive, with notable purity of fruit, the 2009 exudes class. Sweet red cherry, bright floral notes and veins of chalky minerality give the 2009 a compelling interplay of aromas, flavors and textures. Beautifully focused throughout, the 2009 will drink well for the next handful of years (2016-2024)." Nov 2016

Winery:  "This small production wine is made from a careful selection of grapes sourced from our most prized vineyards surrounding the town of Montepulciano. It is made passionately by the Anselmi family with natural, wild yeasts, minimal filtration and no clarification. The wine is aged 18 months in 40hL (4,000 litres) Slavonian oak vats and then 6 months in 10hL (1,000 litres) oak barrels before spending at least 12 months in the bottle. Colour: intense and deep ruby. This is a full-bodied, robust, elegant, and impeccably well-balanced wine with a bouquet of ripe plum, dark cherries and subtle hints of balsam, spices and mint. Best to enjoy with meat, especially lamb, pork or wild boar. Also great with pasta dishes that feature mushrooms or truffles."
