This Alvaro Castro Quinta da Pellada Dao, a single-vineyard field blend of 40+ varieties, is one of Portugal's Grand Crus and most celebrated vineyards from the godfather of Dão, Alvaro Castro. The estate dates back to the 16th century, and they've been honing their craft since then. The 2016 Tinto (Quinta da Pellada), the estate flagship with Quinta da Pellada on the label, is a field blend (over 40 grapes) from old vines. It is principally, for identified grapes, Alvarelhão, Tinta Pinheira and Tinta Amarela. Plus, since 1991, Castro uses some Jaen and Touriga Nacional. It was aged for 26 months in well-used French barriques (five to seven years old) and comes in at 13.0% alcohol. Drink 2021-2045.
This year, this is sourced from the Mata and Casa vineyard blocks. This opens with elegance, but the impressive concentration becomes obvious in short order. Then, it shows off ripe tannins but serious power. At all junctures, this seems so well balanced that nothing stands out, yet everything sort of does. There are hints of great fruit in the background. It is a wine for the long term that will age well. Don't let the fact that it seems approachable fool you—it needs a few years in the cellar to open up.” Aug 2019
Winery: "Bright ruby-garnet. On the nose, powerful aromatics that gain explosivity with some air. Sour cherry, raspberry, cranberry, flint, truffle and violets comingle on the nose. On the palate, this is an elegant, finessed wine with restraint to its power and structure. Built to age, this is tightly wound in its youth with mouthwatering acidity but a beautiful purity to the core of red fruit and minerals. Finishes long, with impeccable balance.
Pairing suggestions: The fresh red fruit and delicate aromatics of the Quinta de Pellada Tinto pair very well with roast poultry and game. Mushrooms and other umami-laden dishes are also fine pairs."
