96pts Antonio Galloni's Vinous

This Arnot-Roberts Trout Gulch Chardonnay's got some serious game. It's a beautifully balanced Chardonnay with stellar minerality from a single vineyard in the Santa Cruz mountains. Have it alone as an aperitif to fully explore the layers of flavors. After that, try it with a homemade lobster roll, seared scallops or breaded chicken cutlets drizzled with a lemony brown butter-caper sauce. That'll be another win in the California Chardonnay column...

Antonio Galloni's Vinous: "The 2019 Chardonnay Trout Gulch is fabulous. Palpable energy and tension drive a core of crushed rocks, lemon confit, mint and white flowers. Intensely saline, tense notes really bristle in this magnificent Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay. The 2019 is naturally very young, but it is stellar. Dried flowers, sage, mint and dried herbs linger. Drink 2023-2029.” Jan 2021

Winery: "The Trout Gulch vineyard sits at 800’ above the tiny town of Aptos, about 4 miles from the ocean in Santa Cruz county. The site was planted in 1980 to the old Wente clone of Chardonnay which is considered by many to be the heritage selection of Chardonnay in California. The soils in this cool climate site are sandy loam and the vines are carefully tended by Richard Alfaro. Harvest often stretches until mid October and the resulting wines are high in natural acidity with a notable salinity on the palate. We are excited to work with such a special site and think the wines we have produced so far from this plot will age well in the cellar for years to come."

Fun Fact: One of the vintner's grandmothers painted the label.
