Band of Vintners Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2018
Say hello to the Band of Vintners Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Yes, you read that right: it's a Napa Valley Cabernet for under $30. It was created by people with histories at places like Larkmead, Thomas Keller's Bouchon, and Freemark Abbey to name a few. Seven Napa Valley friends (4 winemakers, one master sommelier and two wine execs*) with more than four decades of diversified winemaking knowledge and experience created a label based on the simple fact that high quality wines can be delicious and affordable - even from the Napa Valley. We have two words for them: THANK YOU!!
Robert Parker, Jr.'s Wine Advocate: "Medium ruby-purple, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is very pretty on the nose, super floral with notes of blackcurrant bud, violet, bitter chocolate, cedar and classy new oak spices plus loads of red berry sparks. The palate is medium-bodied, lifted, floral and fresh, with a gently chalky texture and long, uplifted finish. Drink 2020-2026.
Band of Vintners is a relatively new project from seven friends who originally connected in a tasting group. "We've been tasting together 12, 13 years," says Stéphane Vivier, consulting winemaker for Hyde de Villaine winery and the only member of the group who lives in Sonoma rather than Napa. "In 2014 we decided to put our resources and knowledge together to make Cabernet Sauvignon." Fruit is sourced from several appellations across Napa Valley, and the wines are well made, pleasantly restrained in style and immediately approachable." Jul 2020
Winery: "The 2018 Band of Vintners Cabernet Sauvignon is a lush, approachable and pleasurable wine. What a spectacular vintage. Weather was consistent throughout the growing season and the resulting wines are complex and powerful.
A warm and inviting nose, reminiscent of a summer day in Napa, conjures up notes of grilled meats and Herbs de Provence. This vintage rolls over your palate with succulent flavors of black currant, boysenberry and dark cherry. These rich flavors maintain throughout the whole arc of the wine, transporting the drinker back to the vineyard full of vines laden with ripe Cabernet. A delicate touch of French oak lends a hint of spice and texture to the palate. The wine continues to stretch out and its supple tannins perfectly frame an elegant finish."
*About the Band: "Born from a monthly tasting group of seven Napa Valley tastemakers— Barrett Anderson, Brennan Anderson, Jason Heller, Cameron Hobel, Dan Petroski, Mark Porembski, and Stephane Vivier—each highly regarded among their peers for their contributions to the wine profession as winemakers, sommeliers and national salesmen.
Together, they pooled their resources, talents and relationships to access some of Napa Valley’s best, sustainably-farmed fruit and all the winemaking necessities to get their wine into bottle."
