Dalla Valle Collina 2017
Dalla Valle winery, maker of cult favorites and very hard to find wines, is a classic Napa Valley boutique winery. Each wine typically produces less than 3,000 cases annually, most of which are sold through the winery's private mailing list.
In the earlier years of Dalla Valle, Heidi Barret was their winemaker. Yes the Heidi Barret from Screaming Eagle. Andy Erickson works for the winery now, and he used to be a winemaker for Screaming Eagle. Michel Rolland, the globe trotting consultant, works with Dalla Valle on the wines and vineyard management.
If we told you how we got our hands on some of the Dalla Valla Collina, we might have to kill you. They only made 600 cases of it, and Jeb Dunnuck calls it a "stunning value". It is all that, and a bag of chips.
Jeb Dunnuck: "What could be thought of as the entry-level wine from this benchmark estate, the 2017 Collina is a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot. There’s not much made (600 cases) but it’s a beautiful wine that certainly has the classic vibe of the estate as well as medium to full body, a rounded, textured mouthfeel, solid mid-palate density, and beautiful cassis, currants, Asian spice, and flowery incense aromatics. Given the prices of Napa Valley Bordeaux blends these days, it’s a stunning value. Drink 2021-2036." Jan 2020
Winery: "The Dalla Valle wines from 2017 are a welcome gift from a vintage that reflects the resilience of Napa Valley. The season began with ample winter rain followed by very little rain in spring, which allowed the vines to set a balanced crop with healthy canopies. Several heat events during the year pushed the vines along, but with forethought and diligence in the vineyard we were able to keep fruit development in check. In the end, as fruit started coming in, it was apparent that the wines had a focus and acid/tannin balance that would make them very appealing.
Sure enough, the wines now show a red-fruit freshness and narrow focus, plenty of structure, and a brightness that makes them enjoyable right off the bat. The 2017 Collina Dalla Valle, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot from our hillside estate, offers a vivid look at what our vineyard produces: richness, structure, and length. Fresh red raspberry, nutmeg, vanilla bean and toasty oak aromas are immediately notable. On the palate, these same characters follow through, delivered on a precise, finely woven lattice of tannin and natural acidity. While the intensity of the fruit drives the impression of the wine, the highly integrated French oak flavors add to the length of the wine. As it is not filtered or fined, the wine continues to open for hours in the glass and will certainly develop nicely for years in the bottle."
