In vena di qualcosa di delizioso? Then you are going to love this Il Poggione Rosso di Montepulciano! At this price, this is yet another terrific opportunity for a tasty Italian red that won't permanently harm your wallet. Enjoy your first ruby red glass with some wild mushroom, garlic butter crostini. You may be temporarily transported to Enzo's Tuscan terrace if you close your eyes... The lovely combination of dark, red fruit and berries, silky tannins and a polished, firm structure makes this Il Poggione ideal for roasted and grilled meat, lamb, roast pork, and hearty, meaty pasta dishes. We think it is particularly well suited to fork-tender osso buco and a toasted pine nut gremolata. Che cosa potrebbe esserci di meglio? We invented our own favorite lasagna made with meatballs and eggplant in the layers, and this Tuscan red couldn't be better with it. If you would like to bring out the silky tannins of the wine, we suggest grilled lamb and fig spiedini (skewers) with mint-pepper glaze and grilled baby artichokes. At this point, you will want another glass, and a course to go with it, so open one more bottle and savor it with a Spanish Garrotxa cheese. It's milky with a hint of nuttiness and will cozy up to this friendly Italian like a long lost friend...

Antonio Galloni's Vinous: "Bright red. Flint, ripe red cherry and sweet spices on the very ripe and forward but ultimately fresh nose. The sweet spice notes and a refined, austere mouthfeel are typical of the S.Angelo in Colle terroir. Closes juicy and fresh, with lively flavors of red cherry and more sweet spices, plus hints of underbrush. Ages one year in both used 30-50hL oak barrels and used barriques, then spends six months in bottle before being released for sale. Made from 15-year old vineyards. Drinking window: 2020-2023. Apr 2020

James Suckling: "Pretty floral and berry character here with walnut and spice aromas that follow through to a medium to full body, juicy tannins and a lightly chewy, tannic finish with just a hint of new wood. Give it a little time to come together. Drink or hold." Jul 2020

Winery: "A younger, more accessible version of the Brunello, but already with an excellent structure and a great personality, Rosso di Montalcino is a very important wine for Tenuta Il Poggione. It is produced entirely from Sangiovese grapes sourced in the estate's younger vineyards. The wood aging, although not obligatory for the production of Rosso di Montalcino, tones down the tannins typical of a young Sangiovese and gives this red wine a complexity of aroma and structure that make it a great 'Young Brunello'."
