Francis Ford Coppola and his wife Eleanor, bought the Inglenook winery in 1975 and renamed it Niebaum-Coppola. Some time later they renamed it Rubicon, until 2011 when they finally regained the trademark to Inglenook, which it has been called since that time. The couple brought Philippe Bascaules on board in 2011 as general manager of the estate. Mr. Bascaules was in Bordeaux at Chateaux Margaux for the 20 years before that, a legendary estate with 500 years of stunning history. It is one of the most highly respected and celebrated 1er Cru Classe wine properties in the world. To say that Mr. Bascaules is an expert is a terrific understatement.Mr. Bascaules presented the Coppolas with a 50 year plan to manage and renew the grapevines and winemaking process upon his arrival. The Coppolas had been working towards this goal since their purchase of the estate in 1975, with good progress. Mr. Bascaules is the big gun who will take things to the next level. This Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon is one example of the rewards to come. Just try finding it for less on the web...
Antonio Galloni's Vinous: "The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is a powerful and dense in the glass. Sweet tobacco, menthol, licorice and grilled herbs give the wine its aromatic nuance. This is an especially savory style, with mid-weight structure and linear tannins that need time to soften. This is a super-classic Rutherford Cabernet. Drinking window: 2022 - 2034." Mar 2018
Winery: "This is a tribute to the historic world-renowned Inglenook 1941 vintage, produced by John Daniel, Jr. from vines brought to the Inglenook Estate from Bordeaux by Gustave Niebaum. Today, this estate-grown wine is blended with the best lots of Cabernet Sauvignon that remain after the highly selective blending of Rubicon.
The 2014 vintage of Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon reflects a very pure composition that contains only small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and just a touch of Merlot. From this outstanding year emerges a smooth, generous palate with very fine dusty tannins and exemplary balance. As weighty and voluptuous as its predecessor, the flavors and fragrance of this vintage lean more heavily toward black fruits and seasoned wood. Cassis, blackberries, plums, and black currants provide juicy, mouthfilling flavors while distinct notes of cigar box, oak, graphite, and earthy spices create aromatic accents that are bound to evolve and become even more intense with bottle age. Yet, impressive density and texture already create ample allure.
