First made in 1959, Bin 28 is named after the famous Barossa Valley (South Australia) Kalimna vineyard purchased by Penfolds in 1945 and from which the wine was originally sourced. Today, Kalimna Bin 28 is a multi-region, multi-vineyard blend, with the Barossa Valley always well represented. The warmth and generous fruit of this Shiraz (Syrah) make it a fabulously food-friendly wine. Try pairing with dumplings or bone-in cowboy steak for two, generously salted and peppered, and then grilled to perfection.
Wine Spectator: Top 100 Wine of 2020. "Shows terrific concentration, with dense and chewy tannins providing an appealing backdrop to the blueberry, dried cherry, date and candied ginger flavors. Tobacco, tomato leaf and espresso notes linger on the finish. Drink now through 2030' Nov 2020
James Suckling: "A strong vintage for warmer-climate shiraz and this wine is certainly reaping the benefits. The nose has such eclectic fruit aromas that run a full spectrum, from the lighter spiced red-fruit aromas to red plums, through blue fruit to darker blackberries and plums. The palate has impressively layered flavors that run the same broad spectrum as seen on the nose and the tannins are so well groomed and run very, very long. Holds fruit flavor deep."
Winery: "Color: Vibrant, dense plum red, red edges. Nose: A black Kalamata olive tapenade as a first impression, beneath an overlay of camphor and tobacco. How to say this politely? Boot polish, bitumen, cola, granite ... darkened style/varietal base notes. Yet blackberry conserve and sour cherry fill the (fruity) treble register."
