Ratti Marcenasco Barolo 2016
This is the 50th vintage of the Renato Ratti Marcenasco Barolo. Yes, 50. You should know that Nebbiolo grapes have been growing in this region since the 12th century. Translation: they really know what they're doing. This Marcenasco is highly regarded and deservedly so, with its ripe, lush red fruit, delightful earthiness, hint of licorice, and overall smooth, yet powerful persona. It's ready to drink now, but patience will be richly rewarded with an even more complex, elegant wine. If you're able, we say wait. And then whip up a big holiday prime rib, boneless prosciutto and sage-wrapped pork roast or butternut squash in a brown butter sauce with flash-fried sage.
Wine Enthusiast: "Iris, rose, botanical herb and dark spice aromas lead the way in this fragrant red, along with an enticing whiff of graphite. Elegantly structured and boasting youthful tension, the vibrant palate delivers juicy Morello cherry, crushed raspberry, cinnamon and star anise framed in taut, refined tannins. It's balanced and focused, with bright acidity. Drink 2024–2036." Sept 2020
Robert Parker, Jr.'s Wine Advocate: "This is one of the most versatile, accessible and inviting wines to be found anywhere in the Barolo appellation. That is the legacy of this wine, and the Renato Ratti 2016 Barolo Marcenasco proudly carries forward in this tradition. Indeed, it takes it a big step forward, as this is my favorite edition tasted in years. Fruit comes from a single vineyard located just outside the winery door. Marcenasco was farmed by Renato Ratti and his son Piero, and it remains the flagship of this estate. This vintage is beautifully perfumed and vibrant, and the wine tastes terrific just out of the gate. The finish is delicate, tightly knit and feathery light on the palate. Drink date: 2021-2035." Winery: "Colour: light ruby red. Scent: complex and elegant, of cherries, small red fruits, oriental spices, underbush and licorice. Taste: robust, intense, energic and fruity, with elegant freshness and solid tannins.
Noble and generous, glory of old Piedmont, a wine suitable for long aging, Barolo is the absolute master of the table. It conquers the palate with the conviction of strength, harmony and fullness and holds its sway at length. Barolo Marcenasco has ancient origins. There are historical documents from the "Rigestum Comunis Albae" that bear witness to the cultivation of the Nebbiolo wine in the "Marcenascum" area already back in the 12th Century. Barolo Marcenasco is smooth, balanced, elegant and faithfully, best to drink between 6 to 12 years after the vintage. Red meats on the spit or grilled, game, "grande cuisine" white and red meat dishes and aged cheeses."
