Rodney Strong Upshot 2017
Our lunch at the steakhouse yielded one of the best (and biggest) burgers we've ever had. Perfectly cooked, toasted bun, melted cheese, horseradish mayo... We could go on. The standout and brand new wine for us was the Rodney Strong Upshot. It's a delicious and unorthodox mix of five different varietals; boy are they onto something winelovers! It's got great body, beautiful dark fruit, tannins that jumped for joy when they saw our burgers, and an unexpected brightness which really drew us in. Spaghetti and meatballs is another dish that would work beautifully with the Upshot, or grilled lamb chops, or a wild boar ragu over pappardelle. Again, we could go on. One more thing: it's offered at a great price. Our advice: run, don't walk to your shopping cart.

Winery: "Introducing Upshot, the end result of our winemaker’s passion for blending flavorful, deeply nuanced and unique wines. Exclusively from vineyards in Sonoma County, predominantly Alexander Valley and Knights Valley, our Red Blend offers a sumptuous, almost magical outcome of the growing season and winemaking process. This rich, supple wine bursts with blackberry and dark cherries with hints of spice followed by lush, rounded tannins and a lingering finish."
"This wine was made to enhance the enjoyment of life in a fun and inviting way. The Zinfandel that comes off one of our estate vineyards, called Hubbard Ranch, starts as the foundation of the wine and gives it a great sense of place. The Merlot adds a sense of sensuality and softness that invites you in to the heart of the wine. The Malbec is the flesh and soul of the wine. It adds beautiful blue and red fruit and contributes to the mouthfeel with depth and texture. The Petite Verdot is the confidence of the blend and adds intensity and complexity. Lastly, because the wine is about enjoyment, I added a splash of Riesling for the fun…It adds a floral high note.
The UPSHOT of blending these varietals is a wine that was made to underscore my passion for blending wine, a place that I love, and my enjoyment for this amazing life I get to live." ~ Justin Seidenfeld, winemaker
